How our COBOL interview questions work

It should seem obvious that the best way to assess a developer’s skills is by presenting them with challenges based on the real work they do every day. However, up until now, developers have been assessed using algorithmic puzzles and by reciting coding patterns they might not have used in years. At DevSkiller, we do things differently.

DevSkiller COBOL interview questions are centered around the RealLifeTesting™ methodology.

Unlike other coding tests, DevSkiller COBOL interview questions present candidates with problems that mirror the real work they do. These assessments are able to show much more than algorithm tests and help to provide valuable insight into a candidate’s COBOL development skills.

Key features of our COBOL interview questions

  • Gain insight into the candidate’s coding skills and not just their academic knowledge

  • RealLifeTesting™ methodology offers a greater user experience where candidates can use their own IDE, clone to Git, run unit tests, and access Stack Overflow/GitHub/Google for research
  • Various anti-plagiarism tools to ensure test accuracy
  • Automated results that non-technical professionals can understand
  • COBOL interview questions available for all levels of seniority

What to know when looking for a COBOL developer

COBOL or Common Business Oriented Language was one of the world’s first high-level programming languages and dates back all the way to 1959. One would think with it being so old in technological terms, that its practical use has dwindled, but COBOL is still widely used around the world. COBOL is particularly prevalent in the banking systems of many countries and is the language used in ATM machines, credit card processors, phones, and traffic signals to name but a few.

The unique aspect of COBOL comes from the fact that it was designed to be able to run on all brands and types of computers, paving the way for its continued use today.

Design your own custom COBOL interview questions

If you would like to get more out of our COBOL interview questions then that can be easily managed. With our COBOL online tests recruiters have the choice to use our default test settings, or to build your own custom tests.

A custom COBOL online test gives you more control over your recruitment process. You can alter the difficulty level, the scope, and even the language being tested. You also have more control over the duration of each test and each question.

Did you know you can also monitor our COBOL interview questions in real-time?  You can observe each participant as they take their test to see how they manage. We also have our automatic plagiarism detectors in place to make sure no one gets an unfair advantage.

Want proof that our COBOL interview questions work?

Knowing the best place to invest when it comes to the finances of your business can be daunting. Rather than take our word for it that our screening tool is the best way to find the right COBOL developer, hear it from our happy customers:

Jonatan Rugarn – CEO, Founder, Recruiter at Lingonberry Talent Acquisition, Engineering Manager at Avinode Group

“The duration of the recruitment process has not changed, but we spend less time and effort per candidate. We also don’t waste time on the wrong candidates.”

Victoria Cyczewska – Talent Acquisition Specialist at Stepstone Services

“We now have a tool which allows us to not only collaborate to create tests assessing technical skills we need to grow, but also to communicate internally and externally (with candidates). What is more, our technical recruitment process is now more structured. As an example, we use our technical screening results as a conversation starter during technical interviews.”

Magdalena Rogóż – Deputy Marketing Manager at Kodilla

“Using DevSkiller to grade tests is 2 times more cost-efficient while giving our students a much better test and preparing them for future recruitment tests.”

Frequently asked questions

What is RealLifeTestingTM?

You might not have heard about RealLifeTestingTM, but it is changing the way businesses hire developers. Put simply, RealLifeTestingTM works by creating a simulated version of reality and then testing developers with challenges presented to them within that simulated reality. This means that recruiters can now actually see how a candidate will deal with certain situations in the real world because their reactions have already been laid out in front of you. This allows recruiters an in-depth view of a candidate’s exact strengths and weaknesses during the initial screening.

RealLifeTestingTM assesses candidates on the coding skills, mistakes in their coding, time-management, and problem-solving. All the things you would expect a good developer to do well.

How do candidates take a test?

Our online platform can be accessed from anywhere. This means that our COBOL interview questions can be taken remotely, a great benefit to our candidates as they can start whenever they like. All they need is a test invite.

During testing, candidates can choose to work on DevSkiller’s own state of the art in-browser IDE. If they prefer they can complete the project on their favorite IDE and then clone their project to GIT afterwards. Just like in their real development work, candidates can run unit tests to make sure their solutions work properly. The test is set to a specific duration, after which DevSkiller’s task wizard automatically gets to work on the solutions and sends an easy to understand report back to the recruiter with how the candidate performed.

How long does it take to set up DevSkiller?

The great thing about our testing platform is it is mostly automated, saving hours of manual labor. Once you’ve created an account, you can start sending out your first COBOL interview questions straight away. Our task wizard comes prepared with a catalog of COBOL online tests that can be sent straight out to each candidate.

If you are feeling more technical, you can create your own tests or use our default settings with no extra work required.
