What to look for in a security engineer
A security engineer’s primary goal is to prepare for cyber attacks. Among other things, a competent security engineer should be able to fix unsafe procedures, apply software and hardware update policies, and design access controls to various systems and data.
They also need to understand more domain-specific issues. These include social engineering, phishing, buffer overflows, XSS, zero-days, and Metasploit. Finally, security engineers need to have an understanding of Intrusion Defection/Prevention Systems or Security Information and Event Management systems.

Want proof that our Security online tests work?
Knowing the best way to invest your business’s finances can be daunting, particularly if that investment is in something new like our screening tool. After all, DevSkiller security tests are different from conventional development testing. Rather than us convince you then, read what our customers have had to say:
Richard Williams – VP of engineering at Plutora
“Thanks to automating the screening stage, we were able to reduce the interview rate by 50%. At the same time, the quality of candidates who make it to the interview stage is now much greater. DevSkiller adds an extra layer of quality to our technical hiring process”
Julien Gauthiez – Talent Acquisition Manager EMEA at Criteo
“We use DevSkiller in 15 locations around our 3 regions (US/APAC/EMEA). We have 7 frequent users in TA (recruiters) across our regions, and our technical hiring manager users rotate depending on current needs. More than 30 have logged into the platform once to review an assignment or create a test.”
Sabu Pappu – Talent Acquisition Lead at Veriday
“We have reduced the tech rejection which is great. We’ve seen a 25% improvement at this point after the implementation of DevSkiller. The platform really helps us to assess the programming skills of candidates and provide a logical approach to the problem-solving skills of IT professionals. DevSkiller saved us a lot of time while we had a ramp up and helped us to invite good quality candidates who have performed well in the test, which eventually improved the selection criteria.”
Frequently asked questions
What is RealLifeTestingTM?
DevSkiller is leading the way when it comes to developer testing because we implement the RealLifeTestingTM methodology into our Security online tests. RealLifeTestingTM works by recreating a developer’s actual work environment through simulation, with test candidates then being presented with realistic challenges to overcome.
Security online test candidates are evaluated based on the accuracy of their coding, the speed of their responses, and their critical thinking skills. Rather than simply reciting algorithms and coding patterns, candidates will be expected to perform in the same manner as they would in the developer role itself. There can be no hiding away. The developer candidates that are most adept and who show the most understanding when it comes to Security, are those who will progress.
Do I need to be a programmer to use DevSkiller?
No, you don’t need to be an expert in Security development yourself. We have our own experts who have designed our Security online tests, doing the hard work for you. Our aim is that company recruiters who aren’t experts can be confident in hiring the right people for the role, without needing to be well versed in Security development themselves.
Our DevSkiller Security tests accurately verify the technical skills of each candidate and present the recruiter with the results in an easy to understand, automated report. This will give you a detailed account of the strengths and weaknesses of each test subject, all while still in the initial screening stage.
How do candidates take a test?
DevSkiller Security tests can be accessed remotely. In a world becoming increasingly more dependent on remote working, in-house developer testing is slowly becoming a thing of the past.
Our Security tests are accessed online and can be taken from anywhere, at the convenience of the candidate. Tests are issued with time-limits to create a level playing field and even individual questions can be given set durations.
When working on the tests themselves, candidates can use their favorite IDE and then clone the project to GIT. Alternatively, if they prefer, they can use DevSkiller’s own state of the art in-browser IDE to complete the project. During the assessment, much like with their real development work, candidates can run unit tests to ensure their solutions are working.
What’s the test duration?
Test duration is flexible depending on you, the recruiter. Our Security online tests come set with default settings, which can be altered to suit your requirements if necessary. Recruiters can control the duration of the tests, set individual time-limits for certain questions within a test, and even make test invites active for only a certain amount of time if desired.
